Meet our team - Craig Nelson

We are a group of like-minded individuals who want a council where all processes are open, transparent and where important decisions involve widespread community consultation. We are committed to building on the many strengths of our community to ensure Bellingen Shire remains independent and in control of its water catchments. |
By harnessing the resourcefulness and creative energy abundant among residents, we envisage our small shire becoming a model of excellence for sustainable development.
While maintenance and improvement of existing infrastructure such as roads, bridges, footpaths and cycleways is important, developing new economic and employment opportunities is crucial. Council should actively encourage business beyond tourism.
I believe we should look at ways to add value to traditional dairy/beef and timber products. We should also encourage new sustainable industries such as renewable energy, alternative health, and information technology.
The last thing we want is development that destroys our unique natural environment.
Council has a vital role as a focal point for individuals and groups to exchange information and access funding and development opportunities from other government agencies and private enterprise.
A Thora resident for eight years and with more than 20-years experience as a journalist for various media and major corporations, I would bring to council what currently it seriously lacks – communication skills.
My vision is an even more diverse, vibrant, healthy community where we respect, listen to and look out for each other.
